InterLibros is an NGO whose objective is to improve literacy levels and promote reading among children in Latin America.

InterLibros aims to:

*provide opportunities for learning and promote reading in general in parts of the world where access to books is severely limited
*give books which are no longer used a new lease of life in Latin America
*promote the idea that giving a book is a gesture for the planet, both in terms of recycling and of helping others.

InterLibros collects books in Spain from schools, libraries, publishing companies and individuals, and ships them to a local NGO in the recipient country. They are then distributed by the NGO. To date, more than 185,000 books have been sent to 25,000 children in 6 countries in Latin America.

What type of books are needed?

*Books in Spanish, either new or in good condition, and suitable for children and teenagers up to the age of 18.
*Picturebooks, storybooks or novels
* Educational books (eg. on nature, art, science)
* Reference books (dictionaries, atlases, encyclopedias) which date from 1990 onwards.

Textbooks cannot be used as schools in Latin America follow different programmes from schools in Spain.

“Books may not fill our stomachs, but they feed our intellectual capacity to take charge of our lives and build our own happiness. They teach us to be authors of our own destiny.”
Candelario Reyes, Director of the NGO Centro Hibueras, Honduras
